collaborative Editing

Developmental editing is for your ideas first, before your words. I’m here as a creative partner to help you think through your content, clarify your intentions, refine your message, and create a structure for that works for you.

Because every book is unique, I don’t work to a formula or a template; I won’t apply anyone else’s blueprint to your book.

My editing process always begins with a consult call. I want to understand your vision for your book and hear your feelings about your manuscript’s strengths and weaknesses, before I consider any changes. After our call, I read your complete draft once through so I have the full book in my mind. On the second read-through, I’ll write in-depth margin commentary. My editing style is deep and rigorous but empathic, and my editorial letters are lengthy, as I explain the reasoning behind my suggestions and provide examples of writing craft techniques and ways to revise.

I am available for more calls and continued discussion after your edit. My goal is for you to feel nurtured and guided throughout the revision process, because I know that when you have the right support you can create your best work.

Developmental editing for any stage of your writing Process

Have you written several chapters but now you feel stuck?

Most authors get stuck at some point during writing. It’s often because their message or purpose needs clarifying, or because the direction of the book has changed and the original structure is no longer working.

Consulting with an editor will shift the energy so you can see what needs to change, and what comes next. Getting a developmental edit now should put your writing back on track.

Maybe you’ve completed a draft but aren’t sure where to begin with revision?

This is an excellent time to revisit your book’s structural foundation. We’ll ensure your ideas are clearly presented and organized and determine if anything is missing or cut what’s unnecessary. We’ll work on chapter flow and transitions, and verify that the book fulfills its promise to the reader with substance and depth. A developmental edit now will give you a sound final draft ready for line editing.

Total cost and timeline will vary based on the initial condition and word count of the manuscript. After I’ve reviewed your draft, I’ll prepare a custom project proposal.

As an example, a developmental edit for a 65,000 word manuscript may run approximately $3,000 and take four to six weeks to complete. It includes two consult calls, an editorial letter, complete margin comments in the manuscript, and further discussion through email and voice notes.

Coaching through the revision process can be added for an hourly rate.

I offer line editing for authors who’ve completed a developmental edit and have a structurally sound finished draft.

Line editing is more than grammar-polishing—it’s refining each sentence for clarity, flow, and word choice. I can elevate your writing, so it sounds like you at your most clear and powerful, taking your words from good-enough to magnetic.
